Names to Remember

Perhaps it is because 2012 is an election year or maybe it is just “That Time” (regardless of the Mayan Calendar) three names are showing up in the news pertinent to the hobby of metal detecting.

One is the American Great Outdoors Initiative (AGOI). If you are not familiar with this Obamaism it is time to get out the Google and start studying.

In a nut shell the AGOI is an effort to take more and more land out of the public domain for recreational use and to set it aside for passive endeavors (does that include relic hunting, gold prospecting, metal detecting and gem digging) NOT LIKELY but make your own assessment. If you are interested in retaining your right to detect take some time to review this initiative before November. What are the other two names rising to headline status? It’s time to tune in to Public Lands for the People (PLP) and the American Land Rights Association (ALRA). Both these groups are ascending stars in the fight to retain our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We are all familiar with FMDAC; it is imperative to continue our support of FMDAC but it is also in our best interest to become more active in bolstering those in the front line defense of citizen’s rights to detect, sluice, surface hunt and pursue the happiness associated with these wholesome outdoor activities. More information will be made available at upcoming club meetings. In the meantime visit the following web sites to draw your own conclusions on what is going on behind the scenes to both destroy and to save our American heritage of exploration and self sufficiency: www.goldprospectors.org, www.plp2.org and www.landrights.org.

METAL DETECTING CODE OF ETHICS

1. Before metal detecting public sites always check laws, ordinances or regulations that may govern your search.

2. Never trespass. Always get permission when metal detecting private property.

3. Never leave open holes. Leave the search area exactly as it was before your metal detecting.

4. Report the discovery of any items of significant historical value to the local historian or museum.

5. If you discover live ammo or a lethal object, don’t touch it. Mark the site and notify the police at once.

6. Be polite and informative to those who inquire about your hobby. You are the ambassador of a pastime we want to protect and we will be judged by how you act and respond.
